Before the automobile it was hard for people not to obtain enough exercise. If they did not have animals such as horses it was common to walk many miles each day. There were few options for travel over land besides walking. Fortunatly walking is a great exercise. More important than how fast you walk as is your distance. Kenneth Cooper pubished a book in the sixties called Aerobics. A best seller it involved assigning points to exercise based on distance or time. Many new systems have been developed since, however, it is still a good source about the fundamentals.

These are some basics:

  • Walking is the best exercise, however, it is good to alternate between different exercises.

  • Find a personal trainer that is certified by the AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) or the American Council on Exercise.

  • Don't exercise to much and build up slowly.

  • Exercise a minimum of 3 days each week and skip one or two days.

  • If you don't change your diet you will still lose weight with sufficient exercise.

  • Use a dairy or chart to keep track of your progress.
